Theater Basel | Die Blume von Hawaii (the flower of Hawaii)

The flower of Hawaii, an operetta by Paul Abraham, plays at the Theater Basel now.
Inspired by the fate of the last queen of Hawaii, who was deposed by the Americans and immortalized in musical history as the composer of "Aloha 'Oe", Paul Abraham and his librettists created an incredibly entertaining operetta in spite of the background of the story being a  political conflict. Hawaiian Nationalists bring Princess Laya back from Paris to marry Prince Lilo Taro in order to liberate the country from the American occupying. At the same time the American Governor brings his niece to Hawaii and plans to marry her to Prince Lilo Taro aswell.
This sets in motion a champagne-fuelled love carousel involving not only the Princess, the Prince and the niece, but an officer, the governors secretary, an entertainer and a young Hawaiian girl.
The stage is set up like the abandoned entree of the palace in Hawaii and the costumes are very colourful and versatile.
The flower of Hawaii at the Theater Basel is a show full of colour, love, wonderful music and singing and emotions, the story is told in a loud and impressive, captivating and entertaining, sometimes even a bit ironic way and we liked it a lot.
